Michael Green SC is a Senior Counsel (barrister) practising at the New South Wales Bar principally in the areas of Intellectual Property, Information Technology, Privacy Law, Competition Law, Corporations Law, Regulation and planning, corporate insolvency, and general commercial litigation. He came to the Bar in 1998. He has appeared in the High Court of Australia, the Federal Court, state Supreme Courts, and various tribunals, including NCAT. He has participated in many mediations and arbitrations. He has travelled extensively.

Michael has acted for a diverse range of clients in Australia and overseas in a diverse range of industries.

Michael has degrees in Science and Laws from the University of New South Wales, which were awarded in 1991. He has a graduate diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Technology, Sydney. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in June 1991.

Before coming to the Bar, Michael was the head of Corporate Affairs and Planning, of the Audio-Visual Copyright Society Limited (now Screenrights) and the Director, Copyright Law Review Committee (CLRC) Secretariat. Prior to becoming Director of the CLRC Secretariat, Michael was the associate to the Hon Justice IF Sheppard AO in the Federal Court of Australia from 1992 to 1995.

From 1998 to 2002, Michael lectured in Intellectual Property in the Legal Practitioners Admission Board Course run by the Law Extension Committee at the University of Sydney. Michael has also lectured in the History and Philosophy of Science and has given seminars on Forensic Psychiatry and the social theory of risk. He has presented papers at various conferences, including to the International Bar Association.

Michael is a founder and a director of BarNet, a Barristers’ computer network established for Barristers with some 4,500 connected users. He has programming experience, deep knowledge of computer networks and forensics, and has established a number of sites, including the JADE legal research system.

Michael is also a founder and a director of the Technology Dispute Centre, as specialist ADR centre for technology disputes, including intellectual property and building disputes.

Since coming to the Bar in 1998, Michael has been involved in a number of important cases. A list of these cases is available. Michael is also retained to provide legal advice with a view to avoiding litigation.

Michael is a member of the Copyright Society of Australia (of which he is the treasurer), the Co-ordinating Committee for UNCITRAL in Australia (UNCCA, of which he is a member of the executive), the Society of Construction Law Australia (SOCLA), a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), IEEE, AAAI, the Computer Society, and other organisations.
